1. It Was Named During a Pandemic (Sort Of)

In 1776, British naval officer Sam Wallis quarantined his troops here to avoid a smallpox outbreak in the city. The name "Sea Point" stuck...

...because "Plague Point" didn't quite have the same real estate value.

2. It Was Cape Town's First Suburb with Public Transport

By 1862, Sea Point had its own tramline connecting it to the CBD. So technically, Sea Point invented Cape Town's traffic (thanks for that hey).

3. The Promenade Is Cape Town's Catwalk

Whether you're pushing a pram, walking a poodle, or just there to people-watch in oversized sunglasses, the Sea Point Prom is the place to be. WARNING: Dolphins might occasionally photobomb your selfies.

4. Sea Point's Public Pool Is Kinda Famous

The Sea Point Pavilion has Olympic-sized seawater pools, perfect for doing a dramatic slow-mo Baywatch run or just dipping your toes in because, yoh, that water is cold.

5. Graaff's Pool Has Serious MC Energy

Originally built in 1910 for a paralysed woman to swim privately, this hidden pool became a legendary (and sometimes scandalous) LGBTQ+ hangout spot. Today, it's a quiet viewpoint with a whole lotta stories.

6. You Can Literally Fly Off the Edge (Safely)

Sea Point is a hotspot for paragliding. You run off Signal Hill, soar like a bird, and land near the Prom, hopefully with your dignity intact.

7. It's Deliciously Diverse

From Jewish delis to Nigerian restaurants to artisanal gelato, Sea Point serves up serious flavour. It's a global village with better views.

8. Sea Point High Is Older Than Most Grandparents

Founded in 1884, Sea Point High School has seen generations come and go and probably had better discipline than most schools today.

9. It's a Bit of a Literary Celeb

Sea Point features in works by Coetzee and Paton. If it were a person, it'd be sipping a flat white while writing a novel in a corner café.

10. It's Been Named One of the Coolest 'Hoods on Earth

I'm not even joking. Time Out dubbed Sea Point one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world. Told you those joggers in matching gym sets were onto something.
